Horticulture Dept to plant 25,000 palm seeds in Tamil Nadu’s Perambalur
Perambalur: The Horticulture Department has planned to sow 25,000 palm seeds in Tamil Nadu’s Perambalur district this year as part of the Palmyrah Development Mission. The department has a mission to distribute 6,250 seeds in each block, respectively, in Alathur, Veppanthattai, Perambalur, and Veppur, under the Centrally sponsored programme.
The department will focus on 25 village panchayats for planting palm seeds, including Melamathur, Gudalur, Thenur, Arunagirimangalam, Ramalingapuram, Chettikulam, Kolakkanatham, Nochiyam, Ayilur, Ammapalayam, Noothapur, Mettupalayam, Anukkur, Neikuppai, Perali, Pillangulam, Keelaperambalur, Pennakonam, Ogalur, and Sithali. These places have been selected under the Kalaignar All Village Integrated Agriculture Programme during 2024-2025. The aim behind this is to get more and more advantages from the palm trees.

The department will plant the palm seeds in all the newly dug and renovated ponds in rural areas of the district. Palm trees play a vital role in eradicating soil erosion and balancing soil pH, as stated by a senior Horticulture Department official. Additionally, there are several advantages of palm trees, providing value-added products such as palm sugar, neera, handicrafts, and so on.
Perambalur District Collector Grace Pachuau inaugurated the implementation of the scheme at Ayanperaiyur village in Veppanthanttai taluk. During the event, 500 palm seeds were planted by workers from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Deputy Director of Horticulture M. Sathiya and other officials were also present during the event.
