Horticulture output dips, fruit production rises in 2023-24
New Delhi: The horticulture production of India is expected to dip slightly by 0.65 percent to 353.19 million tonne in 2023-24 in comparison to the previous year, as per the government’s statement. The good news is that the production of fruit is likely to surge by 0.65 percent to 353.19 million tonne in 2023–24. As the production of several fruits such as mango, banana, lemon, grapes, and custard apple has increased.
Officials explained that a dip in horticulture productions took place due to a rise in fruit output. They explained that onion production has dipped severely among all vegetables. Vegetable production touched at 205.80 mt, lower than 212.55 mt in 2022–23. The ministry went on to say that the production of onions and potatoes has reduced because of an increase in the production of tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, and some other vegetables.

Onion production is likely to be 24.24 mt, down from 30.21 mt a year ago, and potato production at 57.05 mt, down from 60.14 mt. However, the production of tomatoes has increased, and it reached 21.32 mt from 20.43 mt. Bihar and West Bengal have seen a decrease in the production of potatoes, while Maharashtra witnessed a decline in onions.
However, the fruit production has gained 2.29 percent higher to 112.73 mt in 2023-24 from 110.21 mt in 2022-23. The ministry explained that massive production was seen in the output of mango, banana, lime/lemon, grapes, and custard apples. The production of several fruits such as apples, citrus fruits, guava, litchi, pomegranate, and pineapple had dipped.
The production of honey, flowers, plantation crops, spices, and aromatic and medicinal plants has made a healthy performance of the country’s mixed horticulture sector.
