Iceberg lettuce: A money-making crop for horticulture farmers
New Delhi: Iceberg lettuce is better known as “crisphead lettuce”. Currently, it is a popular leafy vegetable commonly used in salads. It is replete with rich vitamins and minerals, considered it a healthy vegetable. The demand for iceberg lettuce has been increasing, so it has become a profitable option for horticulture farmers. Farmers can earn a hefty amount through the cultivation of this vegetable.
Iceberg lettuce generally grows in cool and temperate climates. The ideal daytime temperature for its growth is between 15°C and 20°C, while nighttime temperatures should range from 10°C to 15°C. Extreme heat or frost can harm the crop. It grows best in loamy soil rich in organic matter with a pH level of 6.0 to 6.5. Proper drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging.

The crop requires regular irrigation but must be protected from overwatering. Drip irrigation is highly recommended as it conserves water and ensures adequate moisture for the plants. For nutrient management, a balanced mix of organic fertilizers and nitrogen-rich compounds is essential.
Frequent monitoring is essential so that it can be saved from pests and diseases. Common pests include aphids, thrips, and cutworms, which can be managed using organic pesticides. Diseases like Fusarium Wilt and Powdery Mildew can be prevented by ensuring proper air circulation and maintaining adequate spacing between plants.
The demand for iceberg lettuce has been growing in five-star hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets. It is being used in burgers and sandwiches. Farmers will have to spend Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per acre. However, they can earn Rs 2 to 3 lakh; this way they can increase their income.
