International Eat an Apple Day set to celebrate on September 21

New Delhi: International Eat an Apple Day will be celebrated globally on September 21 this year. This date is selected because it is matching the apple harvest season around the world. The day reminds us to enjoy apples in any form, like juice, pie, or jam. The main goal is to encourage farmers to grow more apples and to promote fruit farming pomiculture (cultivation of fruits) across the world.

History

The well-known saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” came from Wales in 1866 and became popular worldwide. Apples originally come from Central Asia and have been mentioned in Greek and Arabian myths, showing their importance and health benefits across different cultures. This day is celebrated to bring happiness to the faces of small farmers and vendors who grow and sell apples and is widely celebrated in Western nations.

Apples have an abundance of health benefits; some of them are given below:

Apples reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breathing problems. They are high in fiber, help with digestion, improve mental health, and aid in managing weight and preventing obesity. Apples are made up of 84–86% water, helping you stay hydrated. They are also full of vitamins and minerals that keep you healthy.

A medium-sized apple has about 50–80 calories and is free from fat, sodium, and cholesterol. It’s a great choice for a light and healthy snack. Apples contain a lot of Vitamin C, a natural antioxidant that boosts your immune system, fights infections, heals cuts, and keeps gums and teeth healthy. Apples have a nutrient called ‘quercetin’, which protects brain cells from damage and helps the brain function properly.
