Jammu farmers send to other destinations to enhance horticulture skills

Jammu: A group of 150 farmers of Jammu, including several women participants, has been sent to other destinations to get training in horticulture from experts. Director Horticulture Jammu, Chaman Lal Sharma, flagged off farmers’ visit cum training programme. The farmers are expected to visit demonstration sites, hi-tech fruit nurseries, and processing units across the Jammu & Kashmir region. They will get a chance to interact with horticulture experts to gain skills as well as practical knowledge.

This initiative is designed to train horticulture farmers how to do advanced farming to get better production of fruits, how to process them, and, besides this, enhance marketing skills. Speaking at the event, Director Chaman Lal Sharma said, “This initiative aims to introduce farmers to modern horticultural techniques that can improve the quality of fruit production.” It also focuses on educating unemployed youth about opportunities in small-scale fruit processing units for producing value-added products,” he said.

The programme will give farmers the opportunity to learn about hi-tech polyhouses for cultivating off-season fruits, vegetables, and flowers. This strategy is likely to be helpful in increasing farmers’ income and creating employment opportunities for the locals in the region.

Chief Horticulture Officer Rakesh Kotwal emphasized the importance of exposure visits. “By adopting advanced technologies and setting up small-scale processing units, farmers can enhance their income and generate employment within their communities,” he remarked. Horticulture farmers are likely to get a huge amount of knowledge about modern techniques of horticulture. This training and exposure visit promises to change the lives of farmers of Jammu, and it would contribute to their community’s growth.
