JKPC chief unveils challenges faced by horticulture farmers in valley
Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) chief Handwara, Sajad Lone, has raised the issue faced by the horticulture farmers in the state in assembly recently. He said that the production of crops is not satisfactory due to lack of infrastructure. He further that if the government doesn’t intervene, then agricultural land would be transformed into real estate.
While speaking in the assembly, he said that horticulture and agriculture are key sectors to preserve land resources. He warned that the horticulture sector needs promotion so that the sector remains viable.

He reminded that currently, the apple industry has been facing two major threats: high import duties on apples have created a big issue for farmers in selling their produce, and the other concern is the use of dangerous pesticides, affectomg quality apple production. The government needs to interfere to deal with these issues and overcome these challenges. Otherwise apple growers will have to face a tough time in coming times’, he said.
Lone further added that slow development of infrastructure such as poor road connectivity, lack of proper market, and cold storage affects the horticulture supply. He also unveiled the pending cases of retired horticulture employees. Several retired persons have not received their pensions and other government benefits yet, bringing hardship to their lives.
At last, he said that government intervention is essential for boosting horticulture farmers’ income and ensuring the industry’s sustainability.
