Jujumara emerges as floriculture hub in Odisha

Jujumara: Floriculture is a flourishing business because it fetches huge income to growers. The demand for flowers has been increasing in the local as well as international markets. Jujumara is a place located in Odisha’s Sambalpur district. It is a forested area, and here the development process started late. Despite being considered a backward area, Jujumara is now hitting the headlines because it has now become the home to one of the first farmer-producer organizations (FPO) in the state.

The entire region has been exclusively focusing on the floriculture business.  The climate of this area is ideal for the growth of flowers, so farmers in Jujumara have knowledge of floriculture. Unfortunately, flowers never remain their main source of income.

There is a small village named Sanatanpali, where a couple of farmers grew flowers to sell them in the market almost a decade ago. Gradually, things started changing, and currently, flower cultivation is being done on over 10 acres of land in Jujumara. Therefore, the village has been experiencing a new beginning and transformation.

At present, FPO has expanded in at least 20 villages. More and more farmers are getting involved in flower farming. Although this number looks small compared to floriculture businesses in other states like West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Farmers’ of the region have shown a lot of courage and switched from traditional farming to floriculture, a positive step, showing their mental toughness.

They are now in the process of exploring the floriculture sector. The success of this FPO will inspire people across the state to go for more profitable business.
