Kashmiri horticulturist applies global techniques to local orchards
Ganderbal: A young horticulturist from the Jammu and Kashmir region of Ganderbal has given the concept of a model orchard in the Zazuna area. The name of his project is Agriventures. The project is expected to provide a new shape to the horticulture in the region. He is educated abroad, so he wants to revolutionize horticulture in his region with the help of Italian and American concepts.
The Bibaum Plantation System is an exclusive method of growing fruit trees with two main stems instead of one. This system has not been used earlier in Kashmir. Through this system, orchards can be managed easily, increasing productivity, and pruning and thinning will take place easily. A new apple variety, Italian CIV breeding, is to be introduced. This kind of apple is more disease resistant, and they could play a significant role in the boost of productivity in the region. Two new cherry varieties are being planted using the Bibaum system, which would help in the revival of the cherry industry in Ganderbal.

Kashmir Agriventures has collaborated with Mitogrow, a U.S.-based biotech company, to introduce a special biostimulant to Kashmir. This will make plants’ roots stronger, absorb nutrients better, and able to face climate change. These are essential for the boost of horticultural crops. With this initiative, Ganderbal farmers can increase their incomes.
“Kashmir is a place with great potential,” said Italian horticulturist Giuseppe. “Our goal is to improve the quality of fruit production and help farmers adopt modern techniques.” Hamayun’s research on horticulture has been continuing. He wants to return to the valley with some solution and make the region a horticultural hub and a leader in sustainable fruit farming.
