Katra farmer earns lakhs through flower farming

Katra: A farmer from Katra named Shokat Ali has turned flower farming into a vibrant business. Currently, he has been earning around Rs 10 lakh annually. He adopted both traditional and modern techniques and got a remarkable yield. He and other members of his family grow flowers and make garlands and then sell them in the market, including in Katra.

He grows flowers on 40-50 Kanals of land—20 Kanals on his own and the rest on lease. “We sell most of our flowers in Katra, and any surplus is sent to Jammu Mandi. We prepare in advance for peak seasons like Navratri, which is a great time for flower sales. A good-quality hybrid seed planted in one kanal can earn between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000,” he shared.

Agriculture Officer Dr. Rakesh Sharma praised Shokat’s efforts and the government’s role in supporting young farmers. “He sought our guidance, and we advised him to expand his farming area. We provided high-quality seeds, and today, he is a successful florist.
