Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kinnaur, celebrates ‘Apple Day’ with farmers
Kinnaur: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kinnaur, celebrated ‘Apple Day’ at the Vegetable Research Center in Kalpa, in collaboration with the Horticulture Department of the district. A one-day workshop was held during this event. Several farmers participated in this event. The goal of the event was to educate farmers about better varieties of apples and how to grow horticultural crops scientifically to increase their production.
An exhibition was organized during the programme displaying 35 advanced apple varieties and vegetables grown at the Research Center in Kalpa and Sharbo. This will give a chance to gardeners to the latest apple varieties and their benefits. Dr. B.S. Negi, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department Kinnaur, said that the department is set to introduce a new grading and packaging system this year so that farmers can present their products in a decorative way and earn more money.

He stressed the application of scientific methods in the horticulture sector. Dr. Arun Kumar, the coordinator and scientist, talked regarding the significance of ‘Apple Day’ and the training programme. He also stressed the need for farmers to adopt scientific approaches in their farming to increase their income.
Dr. D.P. Bhandari, a plant pathologist, discussed the impact of climate change on the horticultural sector and urged farmers to use fungicides in the correct amount at an accurate time to protect their crops from diseases and maintain quality. In the end, Dr. Ajit Singh, the former Pradhan of Kothi, thanked Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kinnaur and the Horticulture Department for organizing the camp.
