Kudumbashree surpasses target, grows flowers on 1,253 acres for Onam Market
Thiruvananthapuram: Onam is celebrated in Kerala every year with gaiety. The 10-day festival commenced on September 6, 2024, all over the state. Like every year, Kudumbashree has once again made a strong presence in the Onam flower market this year as well. The floral cultivation got underway before Onam was on war footing to fulfill the demand for different kinds of flowers.
Marigold, jasmine, and lotus are the main flowers grown in view of Onam Market. Currently, flowers are being grown on 1,253 acres of land. Overall, 1,819 farmer groups were involved in floriculture on 780 acres in 2023. This year, the group had a target to start flower cultivation on 1,000 acres, but in a rare incident, 3000 women farmers came up with a mission, and they successfully grown flowers on 1,253 acres.

Kudumbashree women farmers decided to enter the floriculture sector after seeing the massive demand for flowers during the Onam festival. They worked relentlessly to provide flowers to customers at affordable prices so that people could celebrate Onam charmingly. This also increases their income in a short period of time and attracts others to take an interest in floral harvesting. Kudumbashree flowers will be available in over 2,000 Onam Markets in Kerala starting from September 10, 2024.
Apart from flowers, farmers also cultivate paddy, bananas, and vegetables across the state. Currently, they are concentrating more on floriculture, working together with their local CDSs (Community Development Societies).
