Letter Written to MLA to Save Deer Park in Hauz Khas, Delhi

To save the deer park situated in Hauz Khas, the residents of Safdarjung Enclave have written a letter to Somnath Bharti, Delhi MLA. The letter is written by Sagari Chhabra, a filmmaker that has been signed by around 100 residents. They believe that the intervention of DDA can destroy the city’s largest green belt.

The letter features how the recreation of the park has been done in the name of development, beginning with the endeavour to change the name of the recreation area from Deer Park to A Jha Mini Zoo. She calls attention that the deers have been there in the recreation area since the 1970s, which is the way the recreation area got its name, Deer Park. The adjustment of the name will change things as a zoo has various ramifications. It also shows the pictures of authorities carrying out tree-felling for commercial purposes.

The large areas of land have been taken over and are being used for other tasks. Like, the picnic hut is now being used as an office. The Hauz Khas lake is being destroyed by man-made structures around it. Residents want the lake to be a living one.

Besides, huge pieces of the area have been allocated for privatization and improvement. For example, the Rose Garden was obliterated before for a Delhi Metro project. Moreover, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has gained an enormous part of the land and set up walls to restrict the admittance to park goers. New signs have come up in that piece of the recreation area, asserting that it is accessible for lease.
