Light rain brings relief to Delhiites, air quality improves

New Delhi: Delhi experienced light rain on Friday morning, bringing some relief from the ongoing cold wave and pollution. The rain, coupled with stronger winds, improved the city’s air quality, which had been in the ‘severe’ category for the past week. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 369 at 6 am, falling to the ‘very poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The AQI levels in various parts of Delhi were as follows: K Puram (410), Patparganj (401), Punjabi Bagh (384), Rohini (377), Shadipur (360), Wazirpur (390), Burari Crossing (354), Alipur (340), Anand Vihar (396), Vivek Vihar (387), and Pusa (351).

Experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) attribute the improvement to better weather conditions, including stronger winds. However, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) stated that actions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III would continue to remain in force to prevent further deterioration of air quality.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in Delhi. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 20°C and 12°C, respectively.

Light showers are predicted to temporarily ease the city’s pollution by settling dust particles and slightly improving air quality. While this offers a short-term reprieve, authorities urge citizens to remain cautious and continue following air quality guidelines.

The rain brings a much-needed breather for Delhiites, but efforts to combat pollution must persist for long-term improvements.
