Longan turns favourite tropical fruit due to health benefit

New Delhi: Longan (Dimocarpus longan), a tropical fruit also known as the “dragon’s eye,” is gaining popularity for its sweet taste and health benefits. It is primarily composed of water and carbohydrates and is rich in vitamin C; besides this, an abundance of riboflavin (vitamin B2) and essential minerals like potassium and copper are found in it. The content of protein and fat is very low.

Longan is extensively grown in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in China, Thailand, Vietnam, and India. The tree needs a lot of sunlight and well-drained soil. A mature tree bears fruit around 500 pounds each year. The fruit is usually harvested in mid-to-late summer, and it is consumed fresh or it may be dried for storage. Later, different products are being prepared.

This small, round fruit has a translucent flesh with a dark seed in the center, giving it an eye-like appearance. It belongs to the soapberry family, which also includes lychee and rambutan. This fruit has a special place in traditional Chinese medicine. Experts say that Longon helps in reducing stress and improving sleeping disorders. In many Asian cultures, the fruit holds symbolic meaning because of its resemblance to an eyeball.

Longan is considered a cherished fruit due to its combination of flavor, nutrition, and cultural significance. People are gradually discovering its benefits due to improvement of farming techniques and productivity of longan. Therefore, longan farming has been flourishing in several Asian nations.
