Mango flowering: Essential tips for farmers

Lucknow: Flowers have started coming in on mango trees. Farmers need to take utmost care of the tree so that quality and quantity both can be achieved during the season. During the flowering period, it is essential to do proper management of the orchards, such as maintenance of soil quality and keeping the surroundings clean and healthy. Monitor the flowering progress minutely.

A temperature around 24°C to 30°C is perfect for the proper growth of the tree. However, a minimum temperature of 10°C to 15°C is considered good for the flower development in mango trees, but 20°C to 25°C is the best temperature for the ideal development of flowers. Temperatures above 35°C may drop flowers from the trees.

Farmers need to take some steps for the high mango production, such as stopping deep irrigation 1-2 months before flowering. Avoid soil moisture, which can drop flowers. Never use too much nitrogen-based fertilizer because it is good for the growth of leaves instead of flowers. Don’t use too much potash before flowering. Use fertilizers after the coming of fruit in the tree.

Never do unnecessary pruning before flowering, as it makes the tree weak and disrupts the flowering process as well. It is essential to remove dried branches and avoid too much sprinkle of pesticides or fungicides. Waterlogging should not be allowed because it can rot the root, weakening trees and disturbing flowering in the tree.

Look at the tree regularly to avoid pest and disease. It is better to take the advice of experts to get proper management of your orchards. A dearth of knowledge may prove futile and ruin the production. Proper planning and careful management are necessary for a high yield of mango production.
