Aizawl: Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh interacted with top officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments at the Raj Bhavan recently to discuss how to improve agriculture and promote sustainability and organic farming in the state. The governor stressed the organic, chemical-free cultivation of crops. He said that farmers need to use sustainable methods in farming that would increase their income and keep the environment green as well.
He also highlighted the need for organic certification, setting up laboratories, and maintaining high standards to build trust in organic products. A strong supply chain is also necessary, he said, to protect farmers from being taken advantage of by middlemen. This initiative will be a boon for the farming community.

Special Secretary for Agriculture and Horticulture Pi Ramdinliani shared that about 10% of Mizoram’s land is used for agriculture and horticulture. She discussed various schemes that aim to reduce the traditional practice of shifting cultivation, which is common in hilly areas.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing projects, such as promoting Mizoram as an organic state, cluster-based farming methods, and improving soil fertility. Plans to set up two integrated processing units for ginger were also discussed, along with the purchase of equipment like slicers and solar dryers.
At present the state has more than 8,000 hectares of certified organic farmland, and it is expected that another 5,500 hectares will get the certification soon. The tiny state has the potential to grow various fruits, flowers, and vegetables. Farmers’ need the government’s support, better markets, and storage facilities.
