MLA urges farmers to shift to horticulture with government support

Nellore: Sarvepalli MLA Chandramohan Reddy urged farmers to switch to horticulture farming for better income and sustainability.  He said the state government will provide substantial subsidies. Speaking at a one-day training programme on horticulture in Podalakuru mandal recently, he stated the significant investments made in this sector by the previous TDP government (2014–19). He further added that the TDP government spent Rs 44 crore across the district, including Rs 4 crore in the Sarvepalli constituency alone, to boost the horticulture sector.

He criticized the previous YSRCP government, claiming that it had neglected the horticulture sector; the government invested only Rs 21 crore in the this sector over five years. The MLA shared that around 435 hectares in the Sarvepalli constituency are currently under horticulture cultivation, with fruit gardens being the primary focus.

Reddy advised farmers to grow watermelons on a large scale, which he noted could yield a profit of Rs 1 lakh within three months. He also recommended the adoption of drip irrigation, which is supported by a 90% state government subsidy, making it an affordable and sustainable choice for local farmers.

District Horticulture Officer Subba Reddy, Podalakuru mandal TDP president T. Mastan Babu, town president Mallikarjuna Naidu, and other party leaders were also present in the event.
