Modern farming helps Balram earn Rs. 50 lakh annually

Bhopal: Willingness to succeed always helps an individual to fulfil his/her dream in life. A farmer named Balram Singh from Sarangi village in Madhya Pradesh is a true example of it. He did traditional farming in his village like his ancestors for four decades. He had hunger for success in his belly and wanted to do something extraordinary. Fortune favours the brave.

He followed the old saying, ‘No risk, and no gain.’ Therefore, in 2004-2005, he took a bold decision that changed his life as well.  He adopted scientific farming, trying out hybrid crops and new techniques like drip irrigation and mulching to conserve water to improve the quality of his crops.

“I knew I couldn’t keep farming the old way,” Balram said. “Something inside me wanted to try new things; I took risks to achieve something special.” In the beginning, he tasted success with vegetables like tomatoes and capsicum.

He got amazing results; his capsicum plants produced five kilos per plant in just 13 to 14 days; he harvested 130 tonnes per acre. For the time being, he reached on the seventh sky. He faced a difficult time when some viruses attacked his crops and destroyed Balram’s mission.

He became disheartened but didn’t lose heart; Balram switched to fruit farming and succeeded. He started harvesting guava, sweet lime, orange, mango, and even exotic fruits like strawberries and apples in his 60 bighas land. He cultivated yield hybrid varieties like the Pink Taiwan guava and HRMN-99 apple, known for their high quality.

Balram didn’t get any financial help. He directly made contact with big markets in Delhi, Mumbai, and Indore and made massive buyers of his produce. He is a self-made man who saw up and down in his life but remained stable and continued his hard work. Currently, Balram has been earning over Rs. 50 lakh every year.
