Mullick Ghat flower market set to be renovated

Kolkata: The renowned flower market near Mullick Ghat is expected to be renovated soon. After that it will be more organized, and everyone can reach this place with ease and purchase flowers of their likings. Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have already sent a proposal to the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SPMP) in order to market. It is essential to do to ensure better entrances, exits, and parking facilities, and there will be no encroachment on the Howrah Bridge.

Discussion took place during a joint visit to the ghats on Monday, in the presence of top officials of the three agencies. The police requested port authorities, who are launching a beautification drive along the Hooghly River, to redevelop the market between Mullick Ghat and Chotelal Ghat. During the renovation work, flower sellers will have to face difficulty; they may be given an alternative location on Portland.

Officials went on to say that proper parking space is essential; development of bio-toilets is also necessary because Indian and foreign tourists visit the site in a huge number. The police also stressed that vehicles should not block the Howrah Bridge approach.

Several senior officials, such as SPMP Chairman Rathendra Raman, Municipal Commissioner Dhaval Jain, and Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, checked the conditions of numerous ghats. They have decided to install watchtowers, CCTV cameras, and a police outpost for the security of the visitors. Renovation work is set to get underway in April.
