Kashmir: A devastating hailstorm, lightning, and strong wind have badly hit both southern and northern parts of the Kashmir Valley recently; standing crops and fruit orchards in several districts, including Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla, and Kupwara, have been ruined. Farmers and fruit growers were on the receiving end and suffered heavy losses. The storm devastated apple, cherry, pear, and plum orchards.
The impact on vegetables has also been significant. Apple farming is the backbone of the entire valley. Kashmir’s agrarian economy depends on it. The storm has dealt a major blow to thousands of families who rely on it for their livelihood. They don’t know what their future will be.

Minister for Agriculture Production Javid Ahmad Dar has directed officials to assess the damage quickly. He ordered joint field teams to visit the affected areas and submit reports to ensure timely relief. He also assured that the Omar Abdullah-led government stands with the farming community during this crisis.
While the government may offer compensation, farmers argue that this is not a permanent solution. Many fear that a large portion of the compensation does not reach the actual victims. They are demanding a practical and reliable crop insurance scheme to protect against such frequent natural disasters.
Experts believe that the time has come to modernize the horticultural sector in Jammu and Kashmir. It is necessary to install hail nets so that orchards can be protected from strong wind. Farmers need financial support because they can’t afford such nets. They also said that a long-term plan is needed to protect the valley’s horticulture sector.
