Nectarines cultivation brings prospects to Kashmir’s farmers
Jammu: Nectarines, a smooth-skinned fruit similar to peaches, are gradually becoming popular globally for their unique taste, colour, and health properties. It originated in ancient China over 4,000 years ago, attracting people across the world. In India, Kashmir Valley has been yielding high-quality nectarines, creating an option for farmers to get a huge income. The fruit has been attracting young farmers in the valley.
Nectarines are replete with nutrition, getting popularity due to their low fat content, sodium-free, cholesterol-free, and rich in vitamin C, making them a top choice for health-conscious consumers. Their price remains high because its cultivation is not possible everywhere. The farming of nectarines has been providing farmers a chance to make money.

Two types of nectarines have been growing in Kashmir. One variety is of crimson skin and greenish-yellow flesh. It is of medium-sized fruits with a slightly acidic taste; harvesting takes place in mid-July. The other type is of red-blushed skin and juicy. Its size is larger, with red-blushed skin and a juicy, mildly acidic taste, maturing later in the season. However, both varieties have a low sugar content, making them popular in markets.
Farmers need to focus on proper soil and water management for the proper growth of nectarines. This fruit flourishes in deep, sandy loam soils with a pH of 6.5 and requires good drainage to avoid waterlogging. Planting of saplings takes place in February using organic manure and fertilizers. The plant needs proper spacing and nutrients, which will be helpful in healthy tree growth and higher productions.
Proper irrigation is essential during the time of flowering and fruiting; avoid overwatering; otherwise, diseases would damage the trees. Effective pest and disease management is necessary for high-quality production. The harvesting of nectarines offers an opportunity for the farmers of Kashmir because it can fetch handsome income.
