Noted horticulture scientist K L Chadha dies

New Delhi: Noted horticulture scientist and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Krishna Lal Chadha passed away at the age of 88 after a brief illness on Sunday. He is survived by a son and a daughter. He was a renowned figure in horticulture research and made tremendous contributions to the growth of India’s horticulture and agriculture sectors, playing a key role in shaping innovative horticulture policies. He authored several books on horticulture as well.

He was born in Sialkot (now in Pakistan) in 1936. He completed his higher education at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. He worked in several key positions throughout his illustrious career, guiding policies on horticulture development, oil palm cultivation, and pesticide regulation. His extraordinary skill helped in shaping horticulture policies in many states such as West Bengal, Haryana, and Gujarat.

Not only in India he was also a well-known figure worldwide. He was associated with international organizations, including the International Society for Horticultural Science (USA) and the International Mango Working Group. He made his contribution as a consultant for numerous global agricultural agencies.

His invaluable contributions have left an indelible mark on India’s horticulture sector. He always tried to improve fruit and vegetable cultivation, dedicating his life to the modernization of floriculture and organic farming in India.

India has lost a visionary horticulture scientist and mentor to horticulturists. It is difficult to replace him. However, his legacy will inspire researchers and policymakers in the horticulture sector.
