Ozone pollution emerges as Delhi’s hidden air threat
New Delhi: Delhi has been passing through severe pollution levels. People are at health risk. However, an alarming layer of air pollution has been found in Delhi—ozone gas. As per the report by SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), a body working under the Ministry of Earth Sciences revealed that ozone levels in several areas of the national capital have crossed safe limits. The safe limit of ozone level is 100 micrograms. But near Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, ozone levels touched 239 micrograms per cubic meter.

Ozone pollution was considered a summer problem, but now it penetrates year-round. Experts say that ozone is formed due to excessive heat amid emissions from vehicles and power plants in the presence of sunlight. Ozone doesn’t settle down so it can cover long distances. Ozone pollution is harmful for lungs, creating breathing issues, throat infection, cough, and chest pain. Cancer may occur in the case of long-term exposure to ozone pollution.
A report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) titled “An Invisible Threat” reveals that major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur, and Lucknow have crossed dangerous ozone levels. The most shocking case is Ahmedabad, where ozone levels have increased by up to 4000%.
Ozone pollution has been hovering gradually all over the country. It is extremely dangerous for health, agriculture, and the environment. This kind of pollution is not taken seriously. Slowly it is set to be a threat for the entire human being. The government will have to take action in a hurry to overcome ozone pollution.
