People flock to flower markets in Hyderabad amid Bathukamma festival
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s markets currently have turned lively as crowds are reaching at Begum Bazar, Monda Market, and Koti to buy flowers for the Bathukamma festival. The sale of several flowers such as “Gunugu, Tangedu, Marigold, Chrysanthemum, and Pumpkin has surged. A flower vendor at Begum Bazar, Raju Srinivas Goud, said people are purchasing flowers in huge numbers for their Bathukamma floral arrangements.
Bathukammas is a nine-day festival that runs alongside Navratri. On this occasion, women of Telangana amass different kinds of flowers to celebrate the auspicious days. Usually, we use flowers such as Celosia, Senna, Marigold, Lotus, Cucurbita, Cucumis, and so on. Rangoli, flowers, and lights are commonly used for the decoration of the houses.

Bathukamma has been immersed on the last day of the festival before evening,” said V Sree Sindhu, a homemaker from New Bowenpally. , ‘Bathukamma’ is a Telugu word; it means ‘Mother Goddess, come alive.’ Beautiful flowers are arranged on this occasion, shaped like a Gopuram, the pyramidal tower seen at temple entrances,” said Harikrishna Mamidi, director of the Department of Language and Culture.
On the last day, it is expected that around 15,000 to 20,000 gather and take part in various cultural programmes like folk songs and traditional dances. The epicenter of the event is the mini Tank Bund, where the Bathukamma Organising Committee has been hosting the event for 35 years.
