Pioneer of transforming barren lands into green: R.K. Nair
Umargam: Dr. R.K. Nair has been working relentlessly for the protection of the environment. He is a co-founder of ‘Forest Creators.’ His journey of afforestation got underway in 2012, while a huge number of trees were cut down during a road construction in Gujarat. This incident hurt him, then he decided to save the environment at any cost. Since then he has left no stone unturned in the conservation of forests.
He belongs to Kasargod, Kerala. Dr. Nair spent his childhood in a village near Mangalore, Karnataka, surrounded by an abundance of trees, an exciting place to live, work, and learn. He got a job in the textile industry in Mumbai; after that he shifted to Umargam, Gujarat, and started his own business. However, cutting down forests hurt him, so he decided to plant trees and create forests.

In the beginning, in collaboration with a friend, they purchased a plot of land and planted more than 1,500 trees using the Miyawaki method. It is a Japanese technique to grow forests in a short time. He succeeded in his first project in Umargam, enticing the Maharashtra government, and later he was called to transform the dumping land into a dense, flourishing forest.
This made him a celebrity, and several state governments called him to create forests in urban areas in quick time, restoring environmental balance in big cities. His work helped in the transformation of numerous urban damp plots of cities into dense forests all over the country. Besides planting trees, he wanted to make the forests robust so that they can survive in any situation.
Nair has a mission to change the barren lands into green, helping in reducing pollution and improving the air quality of the city. His services for the better environment have inspired and guided a huge number of people to make the planet green with little effort.
