New Delhi. “Insecticides in the food is the cause of his cancer”. In year 2009, when Ramveer Singh, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh came to know that the doctors held insecticides to be responsible for the cancer of his friend’s uncle, he was left shocked. He took a life changing decision and decided to grow vegetables to save his family from eating chemical-rich vegetables.

Ramveer Singh left full time journalism and went to his native place, Bareilly to grow organic vegetables. There, working as a freelance journalist he spent more time in the cultivation of vegetables. He turned his 3-storey house into a farm. Zucchini could be seen hanging in the balcony and tomatoes on the terrace. In his small town of Bareilly, he introduced modern hydroponic farming. Selling these vegetables has also resulted in him earning profits in lakhs annually.

He does farming employing hydroponic method, which he learnt from Dubai. In the year 2017-2018, when he visited Dubai, he was impressed by this method, where farming can be done with water and no soil. This can help avoid infection from insecticide and also saved 80% of water. After returning from Dubai, he engaged himself in researching about hydroponic method from his acquaintances in Kolkata and Mumbai and internet. Then, he began this modern farming in his house located on Pilibhit Road in Bareilly.

Ramveer used his balcony and open spaces for farming. To establish hydroponics system, he used PVC pipes, in which holes were made at some distance to place the forged flower pots. All these pipes are connected to each other with slope. Hundreds of plants were planted in it. Water was supplied through a motor pomp from one end of the pipe to water these plants, which came back to that tank after passing through all the pipes.

More than 10,000 saplings are planted in his farm which is spread over an area of 750 square meters. He grows capsicum, okra, chili, bottle gourd, tomato, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, fenugreek, strawberry and green peas. He grows all the seasonal vegetables with the hydroponics system. Apart from using it in their home kitchen, he also earns in lakhs by selling it.

Ramveer Singh believes that hydroponic farming is healthier and better than other organic farming. Nutrients are better absorbed in the vegetables grown in it. Apart from this, there is no risk of soil pollution with this method. It is also free from harmful pesticide medicines.

His unique farm in the three-storey concrete house attracts the attention of passer-by as well. Ramveer also earns annual revenue of 70 lakh rupees from his ‘Vimpa Organic and Hydroponics Company’, where he helps others to do this modern farming.
