Researchers develop monitoring devices to check air pollution in Vizag

Visakhapatnam: Several states have been severely facing the issue of air pollution in the country. Cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, have been experiencing the poor impact of pollution for many years. To overcome this issue, the pollution control boards have installed special devices so that air pollution data can be displayed and recorded. However, these devices are usually fixed in one place, so data from a particular location has been recorded.

Visakhapatnam has been badly affected by air pollution owing to high port activity; areas like Bheemunipatnam, Parawada, Gajuwaka, and Visakhapatnam Port have high levels of pollution. People don’t have the idea about the exact pollution levels in their areas. Therefore, some students and researchers from the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography at Andhra Pradesh University have created a new device to monitor air pollution levels named ‘Mobile Air Pollution Monitoring Facility.’

This special device can move around the city, and people will get first-hand knowledge regarding the air quality of different areas of the city. This will prove beneficial for the collection of data for research purposes.

The entire facility is installed in a van, and it will easily move from one place to another for collecting pollution levels in the city, and it is likely to give accurate data. Accuracy was lacking in fixed devices. This mobile unit will collect data from every specific location. This project was the brainchild of the university’s researchers and students. Anasa Rao, a research scholar, said this vehicle would be very helpful to the public.
