The art of flower arrangement is a beautiful and creative hobby and also a means of earning good money. Flowers a represent the vital spirit of the beauty of nature and enhancing the beauty of flowers with artistic arrangement. It is an important part of the ambience on any occasion like weddings ,birthdays, parties or any other events in life. It beautifies homes and offices alike and are also used as centre pieces for a table. The flower arrangements are generally composed of cut flowers, foliage, twigs and stems with some accessories. Besides loose flowers are also used for designing flower arrangements in the form of rangoli, garlands ,flower ornaments and hair decoration.
There are basically 3 Types of flower arrangement.
- Western style
- Ikebana (Eastern style)
- Modern ( free style)
- Some of the basic differences between eastern and western arrangements are

Western Style of Flower arrangements:
The emphasis is on the use of many flowers as a mass. This type follows geometrical forms and consists of more number of flowers for depicting a complete and full effect.
- Types in western style of flower arrangement::
- Floral bouquets: these bouquets are made of Roses, Carnations, Gerbera and Chrysanthemum.
- These are simple and easier to assemble than a floral arrangement.

Table centre pieces :
It is nothing but normal flower arrangements, designed to be placed on tables when dinners are hosted on such occasions. The buffet tables lends itself to elaborate still life of flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Floral baskets :
These are done in baskets of varied depths. Flowers for the floral baskets should be chosen on the basis of depth of the basket. These are very popular as a gifts on a special occasions.
Floral wreaths:
It is a arrangement in the form of a circular garland , usually woven of flowers and foliage that indicates honor. These are popular on funerals as a symbol of honoring the deceased.
Corsages:
These are small floral decoration designed to be worn on the dress and are very popular in western countries.
Formal floral arrangements:
These are the basic formal flower arrangements in geometrical shapes like round, triangular, S curve and crescent shape etc.
Round: Flower arrangement is basically round in shape. The round arrangements are designed on dining tables or central tables having lower heights. Its look very attractive and traditional. These are round to oval , globular and horizontal. These have benefit of viewing from all sides.
- Steps fallowed for round shape arrangement:
Arrange the fillers of required length equally or horizontally more as per the requirement of the shape.
Care should be taken to maintain desired shape.
Now properly arrange the mass flowers evenly.
The Whole arrangement should look radiating like sun.
Oval: Flowers make an oval shaped arrangement.
Fan: Flowers make a fan or semicircle shaped arrangement
Triangle: (Equilateral ) All three sides are the same length.
Triangular : symmetrical or Asymmetrical
The symmetrical triangular design is more traditional .
The Triangular arrangements used for large size displaying purpose.
Steps fallowed for triangular shape arrangement:
- Arrange 3 basic lines of the triangle in the container.
- Arrange the mass flowers in the geometrical design.
- Fill the gaps in the designing by properly arranging and fixing the filler flowers.
- The basal and sides can be covered with green foliage.
(Asymmetrical ) Sides of different lengths.
Right angle or L shape :. It is a form having similarity with asymmetrical triangle.
Steps fallowed for L shape arrangement:
Arrange the 2 basic lines forming L shape in the container.
Arrange the mass flowers within the geometrical design.
Fill the gaps in the designing by properly arranging and fixing the filler flowers.
Inverted-T: The flowers make an upside down T (⊥).
Vertical: Straight up, in a bud vase. Tall vertically, narrow horizontally.
Horizontal: Long horizontally and short vertically.
Diagonal: Halfway between vertical and horizontal.
Crescent: Shaped like a quarter moon. It looks delicate and perfect for evening programs .
This arrangement denotes innocence and romance in the life.
Steps fallowed for crescent shape arrangement:
Arrange the crescent shaped curve as basic lines using two twigs of flower or stem as desired.
Arrange the mass flowers within the crescent design.
Fill the gaps in the design by properly arranging and fixing the filler flowers.
Hogarth Curve: Shaped like an S curve. It gives an elegant and exclusive look.
The lines for S shape can be prepared by wiring the flower or foliage or twig or stem.

Arrange the curved S basic lines using 2 twigs of flower or stem as per requirement.
Arrange the mass flower within the geometrical design.
Fill the gaps in the designing by properly arranging and fixing the filler flowers.
Techniques in Floral Design:

Height of the floral arrangement. The height of the arrangement is 1 ½ to 2 times the height or width of container
Steps followed in making Design:
Step 1: Select a design shape.
Step 2: Select appropriate container, Cut floral form, Attach to container.
Step 3: Set container and foam in water for 20 minutes.
Step 4: Select fern or other filler and arrange in foam to cover foam and extend at least 1 ½ times width of container.
Design Techniques (Steps 2-4)
Step 5: Insert flower to make arrangement desired height.
Step 6: Insert more flowers to make design outline & focal point.
Step 7: Add other flowers as needed to make arrangement.

Step 8: Arrange filler flowers such as baby’s breath to give a completed appearance.
