The Celebration of Van Mahotsav is Set From 11 July 2022 to 25 July 2022

According to the Delhi government, the green cover has increased significantly in Delhi. Preparations are being made to increase the green area in Delhi during the rainy season. For this Van Mahotsav (वन महोत्सव ) will start on 11 July 2022 to 25 July 2022. Plantation of trees, although environmentalists have expressed concern over the current situation of pollution, it is being advised to plant such forests in Delhi which have local trees so that pollutants can be filtered out of them.

The green cover in Delhi has increased. In 2013 it was 20% whereas it has now increased to 23.06% in 2021. Amongst all states, Delhi is at no. 1 in terms of green cover.

The average survival rate of trees transplanted here is up to 54%. The government is also engaged in developing ten thousand parks. Plantation of more than one lakh saplings will be done From July 11 2022. The plantation campaign will start in all 70 constituencies of Delhi. The goal is to plant about 10 lakh saplings in this festival to increase Delhi’s green belt and reduce Delhi’s pollution. A plantation drive is conducted every year. About 7 lakh plants will be distributed free of cost.

The rainy season is considered suitable for plantation:
Environment doctor Dr. Fayaz Khudsar told that after planting any plant or tree, irrigation is required for 2 to 3 years once the tree stands and its roots go deep. Later, it does not need to be watered. Planting is easy during rainy days as plants and trees get water easily. The moisture of the soil increases in the rain.

10 thousand parks to be developed at world-class level:
The Delhi government has made a plan to develop 10,000 parks at a world-class level. The government will work on the ‘Green Park Green Delhi’ theme. A target has also been set to plant 35 lakh saplings across Delhi during the rainy season. It will start in July, in which 19 departments and agencies will ensure their participation. Along with this, a third-party audit of all the concerned departments will be done to check the survival rate of the plants planted in Delhi last year so that there is better transparency and monitoring of the plantation work in the state.

A campaign should not be done just to be photographed- Shri. YP Singh (President, INA)

The environment is being saved on paper. On many occasions, government, social organizations, NGOs,  and political parties get saplings planted but no one cares after the plantation is done.  Drives remain only till the photograph is taken. To make it successful, we need to involve school children which will have an effect in 15 to 20 years. The Central Government had made a scheme of ‘One Child One Plant’ in CBSE, but even this does not seem that any child is serious. The child has to be motivated to take care of them by planting saplings around the school and home. The Indian Nurserymen Association is working on the inclusion of children & the kitchen garden. We should try bringing the children near the trees and plants, and making them realize the importance of it. We should plant indoor plants in our balcony and on the terrace.
