New Delhi: The Naivasha Horticultural Fair of Kenya was formed in 2003 with the goal of demonstrating to the world that Kenyan flower farmers are a professional group that cares about their employees’ wellbeing, correctly trains them in the use of pesticides, and so forth. With more than 180 exhibitors, this outdoor event has expanded over time and is now thought to be the biggest horticultural exhibition in Africa. The 21st edition of the fair will happen on September 22 and 23 this year.

According to Chairman Richard McGonnell, the exhibition is quite international, with all significant players, both national and international, in attendance. Kenya is one of the major horticultural nations in the world. They are all there, he claims, “from greenhouse manufacturers, breeders, plastic producers, chemical suppliers, fertilizer suppliers, solar, water, freight solutions suppliers, as well as Corporate Social Responsibility.” And maybe this year we’ll draw more customers who want to visit Naivasha and spend some time in the Maasai Mara.

The way the fair is held has always been quite informal. “One can socialize with acquaintances they may not have seen in the preceding year while sipping on a glass or two of their preferred beverages, tea, or coffee. Especially after Covid, when we missed two years.

We have actually built an entire secondary school, Nyamathi Secondary School, classrooms, clinics, water harvesting, and our own Naivasha Safe House, a rescue home for abused children. All of the profits from the Naivasha Horticultural Fair go to local causes, largely centered around the Woman Child.
