Jamanthi is the most widely cultivated flower. However, 62.5 per cent farmers revealed that their previous year’s cultivation was more lucrative.
This year, 216.82 hectares of land are dedicated to floriculture, which is five times more than the amount of land used for the floriculture cultivation in the previous year.
The Poovani programme of the state government has encouraged all local self-government institutions to start floral production,” as per the report.
Panchayats within the Kattakada assembly constituency were the best in floral growth. Overall, flower farming has been taking place on the 37.75 hectares in the six panchayats of the constituency. A great impact has been made in the flower farming in the district through the various programmes, such as the ‘Nammude Onam, Nammude Poovu’ programme in the constituency.
Apart from Jamanthi, other flowers like vadamulla, harajamanthi, chendumalli and mulla are also being cultivated on a large scale.
Scientific training has been provided to the farmers in the district so that they can enhance their production. ‘Kirshi Bhavans’ provide high quality seeds and saplings. In general, 77 per cent of interested people said that they got all their help from the state government. All the necessary steps are being taken to stop stem rot, which is a key challenge farmers generally faced.
The floriculture sector is likely to create a lot of job opportunities in the district, and it will excel at the tourism potential in the district as well.
