To Boost Horticultural Yields in Kanniyakumari District, Rs. 60.87 Lakh will be Given

For promoting the cultivation of horticultural crops and increasing the yield of fruits and vegetables, the Kanniyakumari district has received Rs. 60.87 lakh during the current fiscal.

Vegetable nurseries will be laid out in 8 government girls’ students’ hostels under a plan for which Rs. 64,000 has been reserved. Every lodging will be given Rs. 8,000 worth of herbal plants, vegetable seeds, gardening equipment, coconut saplings, fruit saplings, etc.
To meet their daily needs the hostel inmates, with the guidance of the wardens, can cultivate fruits and vegetables on their hostel premises to meet their daily needs.
Rs. 7.20 lakh has been allotted for expanding the area of cultivation of horticultural crops by following new micro-irrigation techniques. Also, Rs. 50,000 will be given to each venture like mushroom cultivation, to 10 units with a subsidy of 50%.

Rs. 14 lakh has been allotted for increasing fruits and vegetables yield in the district since the arrival of vegetables to the ‘Uzhavar Sandhai’ (Farmers’ Market) which is gradually falling despite adequate irrigation facilities in the district. Under the scheme, each farmer will get Rs. 20,000 worth of agricultural inputs per hectare. And identity cards will be issued to the beneficiary farmers so as to allow them to sell their produce in the farmer’s market without the participation of the middlemen.

This plan likewise intends to present banana as the ‘intercrop’ among the coconut forest for which Rs. 18.35 lakh has been dispensed and the farmer will get Rs. 26,250 worth of inputs. Those who cultivate vegetables in the coconut grove will be rewarded Rs. 10,000 worth of inputs.
Farmers can likewise buy plastic containers, aluminium stepping stools, net collectors/harvesters, pruning scissors, sprayers and so on through this plan.
