Tripura’s Champaramura turns into floriculture hub
Champaramura: A small village in Tripura named Champaramura is now gradually becoming a floriculture hub due to large-scale flower farming in the village and its surrounding areas. This year, 16 farmers from the region have adopted commercial flower cultivation, mainly focusing on marigolds and other flowers. The growth is superb, and these flowers are being supplied to markets in both the district and Agartala.
One of the local farmers, Titon Chowdhury, who earlier grew vegetables, switched to marigold farming due to frequent monkey attacks on traditional crops. With support from the Bishalgarh Agriculture Sector Office, training programs were conducted to encourage floriculture. Now, Titon and other farmers are growing marigolds in large numbers and plan to cultivate more flower varieties in the future.

Another farmer, Shibu Shil, harvests flowers daily for sale. Wholesalers buy flowers directly from his home, and he also sells them in Agartala. Marigold flowers are priced at 40 to 50 paise each, while garlands of 35-40 flowers sell for Rs 60-70. He has received financial and technical assistance from the Bishalgarh Horticulture Department.
Fani Bhushan Sarkar, circle in-charge of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department in Champaramura, stated that this is the village’s first year in floriculture. Agriculture officers, including the superintendent and deputy director of horticulture, have conducted training workshops. Floriculture has now expanded across 20 hectares in Champaramura and neighboring Laxibil village, involving around 300 families. Financial aid has been provided under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture.
With the remarkable growth of flowers at Champaramura, the floriculture farmers are hopeful that their future is safe and they will soon achieve financial stability and success.
