Uncertainty looms on Kashmir’s apple growers amid poor marketing
Srinagar: Apple farmers of Kashmir are currently passing through a tough time owing to an unexpected drop in apple production and market uncertainty. It is a time to take urgent action and provide ample support to the horticulture sector so that apple growers can survive in the time of crisis. The horticulture sector plays a vital role in Kashmir’s economy and job creation.
Farmers spend every ounce of their energy in the maintenance of apple orchards for the betterment of their lives . Although in recent times several traditional orchards have been transformed into ultra-high-density apple orchards with early-maturing and high-yielding varieties, thanks to scientific research, growers’ hard work, and the support of the government. The government has provided subsidies, better irrigation, and cold storage facilities to help farmers.

In spite of these efforts, farmers are still facing severe issues that have not been addressed by the authorities, making it difficult for them to earn enough for their livelihood from apple farming. The cost of maintaining orchards and selling produce has gone up sharply in recent time, while apple prices have not risen in that ratio for the last decade. This widening gap between costs and earnings is putting immense pressure on growers.
Some of the farmers are applying different techniques, such as using expensive fertilizers and fungicides, to boost productivity. The method went futile because experts told them that the overuse of these chemicals can harm the environment, human health, and the quality of the fruits. This way, farmers experienced huge financial losses.
Though new high-yield, pest-resistant apple varieties could offer some short-term relief, they are not a lasting solution. Farmers, scientists, and policymakers must come together to find sustainable ways to support the apple industry and ensure its future.
