VC stresses post-harvest management in chrysanthemum farming
Hyderabad: Telangana Horticultural University on Tuesday celebrated Chrysanthemum Day. On this occasion, more than 110 varieties of flowers were showcased in the field. A huge number of people, such as scientists, florists, students, and a massive gathering, were present, including more than 10 to 15 farmers who also attended the event. Vice-Chancellor of the university Dr. Danda Raji Reddy emphasized the importance of production technology practices. It would fetch huge profit in chrysanthemum farming.
He went on to say that there is a need to focus on post-harvest management and value addition. In this event, focus was given on modern techniques of flower farming, which would be beneficial for the farmers. Chrysanthemum keeps a special place in the flower market, being a prominent ornamental horticultural plant. It is one of the most commercially viable flower crops.

Dr Raji Reddy further added that, as most of the horticulture produce is perishable, it is essential to focus on the establishment of small cold storage units to keep the flowers fresh for several days. This would help the farmers to sell their products easily. The VC also encouraged an integrated farming system involving the components of agriculture and horticulture for more remunerative farming. He explained that the Telangana Horticultural University is set to start a short-term certificate programmes on dry flower technology to create awareness on value addition and processing programmes for farmers as well as youth.
