Dulal Sarkar leads floriculture revolution in Cooch Behar

Cooch Behar: Dulal Sarkar, a resident of West Bengal’s Cooch Behar, is now a role model in the district’s floriculture sector, attaining amazing success through rose cultivation. He had shifted his farming mode from traditional to the floriculture sector 15 years ago. Currently, he has been cultivating a variety of flowers such as gladiolus, dahlia, and gerbera. Dulal has taken a big step by farming four bighas of leased land exclusively for rose cultivation, planting above 16,000 advanced rose varieties obtained from Odisha.

He got an impressive result. He has been selling around 1,200 to 1,400 roses daily and earning a huge amount of income. Besides roses, Dulal has been successfully cultivating other flowers such as marigolds, chrysanthemums, gladiolus, dahlias, and gerberas on his land. These flowers are being sold in local markets as well as in Siliguri and Assam, boosting his income.

In the beginning, Dula got help from the Horticulture Department and then started flower cultivation. This decision proved a blessing in disguise and changed his life as well because the demand for flowers has been increasing steadily. Therefore, he expanded his business, getting land on lease and diversifying his crops.

Speaking about his journey, Dulal Sarkar shared: “I used to grow traditional crops, but the returns did not justify the effort. So, I shifted to flower cultivation. This year, I planted roses on four bighas of leased land, and about 1,500 roses bloom daily. These are sent to markets in Cooch Behar, Siliguri, and Assam, providing me with a steady income.”
