Horticulture research to be set up in Bikaner 

Bikaner: A new Advanced Testing Center (ATC) for horticulture is being set up in Bikaner with an aim to promote horticultural crops in the area. This is the rare occasion that such large-scale centers are going to be established in Rajasthan to give a new look to the state’s horticulture sector, mentioned by Dr. Dayashankar, Joint Director (Horticulture).

The ATC Horticulture will cover a huge area of 10 hectares. The Department of Horticulture has urged setting up such centers for the acceleration of research in horticulture crops in the entire district so that production can be improved.

Agriculture Officer (Horticulture) Mukesh Gehlot explained that the center is officially named the “Office of the Deputy Director Horticulture (Research) ATC Bikaner.” Seven new positions have been created to ensure the center operates efficiently.

Horticultural crops such as isabgol, fenugreek, cumin, onion, spinach, coriander, radish, garlic, carrot, peas, tomatoes, brinjal, potatoes, and various gourds are being grown on 65,050 hectares of land in the district. Besides this, several fruits such as pomegranate, date palm, ber, and citrus fruits are grown in 1,480 hectares.

It is expected that in developing the ATC, an investment of Rs 360.15 lakh is required, out of which Rs 135 lakh has been approved under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. Deputy Director (Horticulture) Smita Saxena stated that this amount has been transferred to the Rajasthan State Agricultural Marketing Board, Bikaner.

With the establishment of the ATC in Bikaner, it will bring research and innovation in the horticulture sector. The initiative will increase produce as well as boost farmers’ income.
