Flower demand surges in Madurai amid Karthikai month
Madurai: Madurai is known all over the country for its iconic jasmine flower, called ‘Madurai Malli’. This scented flower is cherished for its unusual fragrance and natural aroma. Not to talk of locals, even visitors are like to see the enormous jasmine flower market, purchasing a huge quantity as per their demand and then selling it in the far-flung regions.
Mattuthavani Flower Market has a special place for the flower business. Here, the price of jasmine and other flowers often fluctuates depending on situations. On the occasion of festivals and seasonal events, prices soar. Jasmine flowers are brought to the market from nearby areas like Chatrapatti and Usilampatti, as well as southern districts like Theni, Dindigul, and Virudhunagar.

Tamil month Karthikai has started; therefore, flower prices have soared significantly. The demand for Madurai jasmine remains very high during this month, and the cost has been touching the sky. Earlier, it was sold between Rs 300 and Rs 500 per kilogram and has now gone up to Rs 1,500 per kilogram.
The price of other flowers has surged in the market due to this auspicious month. At present, mulberry flowers have been available at Rs 800 per kg, beech flowers are Rs 800, sambangi flowers are Rs 100, arali flowers and button roses are available at Rs 300 and Rs 200 per kg, respectively. The price of scented Malli (Sentu Malli) is Rs 200 per kg.
